DENVER — The driver accused of driving drunk and hitting and killing a man standing outside a Denver home Monday afternoon has four prior alcohol offenses, according to court records.
James Corpuz, 57, is being held on a charge of vehicular homicide related to the crash which happened around 3 p.m. Monday at the intersection of West Mississippi Avenue and South Irving Street. According to a probable cause statement of his arrest from Denver Police, Corpuz was headed west on Mississippi when he made a wide right in a "reckless manner." As a result, he drove onto a property on Irving Street and struck the victim who was standing on the property.
The victim died as a result.
According to the PC statement, Corpuz was "under the influence of alcohol" at the time of the crash. Investigators obtained a search warrant for a blood draw to determine his blood alcohol level.
Court shows that Corpuz has multiple prior arrests - including four prior alcohol offenses. According to the records, Corpuz was arrested in 2011 and 2012 on suspicion of DUI.
The arrest affidavit from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office related to his December 2012 arrest, indicates the Corpuz license had been revoked due to three prior alcohol-related offenses. The document also indicates that Corpuz told deputies he did not have his license with him - and provided them with a fake name.
Deputies also reported that Corpuz smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and watery eyes. They also found an open can of beer in the front cup holder.
