Driver pleads guilty in death of teen killed on his way to school

Alex Mackiewicz, 13, was hit and killed on March 6 while riding his one wheel to school.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — The driver who struck and killed a Highlands Ranch teen who was on his way to school earlier this year pleaded guilty on Monday morning.

Ruben Morones appeared in Douglas County District Court where he pleaded guilty to careless driving resulting in death. As a result of the plea, charges of careless driving resulting in injury and disregarding a traffic signal were dismissed.

He was arrested in connection with the March death of 13-year-old Alex Mackiewicz, who was hit and killed just before 7 a.m. March 6 at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road. Alex was riding his one-wheel to school when he was hit.

On March 6th, Alex Mackiewicz was hit and killed by a driver on his way to school. He was in the crosswalk with a walk signal, according to the sheriff's office.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said their investigation found Alex was in a crosswalk and had a walk signal when he was hit and that Morones had likely run a red light, deputies said. There's no indication that Morones was speeding.
