Driver arrested in crash that killed Highlands Ranch teen

Alex Mackiewicz, 13, was hit and killed just before 7 a.m. March 6 at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A driver has been arrested in connection with a crash that killed a 13-year-old boy in Highlands Ranch earlier this month, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.

Alex Mackiewicz, 13, was hit and killed just before 7 a.m. March 6 at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road. Alex was riding his one-wheel to school when he was hit.

Deputies said the driver, 52-year-old Ruben Morones, was arrested Tuesday. He is being held on charges including careless driving causing death.

The sheriff's office said their investigation found Alex was in a crosswalk and had a walk signal when he was hit. The investigation found the driver likely ran a red light, deputies said. There's no indication that he was speeding.

Friends said Alex was a car fanatic. On Sunday afternoon, a mix of classic cars, fast cars, sports cars and family cars hit the road, driving in Alex's memory down Highlands Ranch Parkway to the corner of Venneford Ranch Road.

Organizers of the memorial drive said they want to see more visible traffic signals, enhanced crosswalks and increased law enforcement in that area to make that stretch of road safer.
