21-year-old faces possible murder charge in road rage shooting in Denver

Fernando Alvarez-Chacon, 35, died after being shot on South Santa Fe Drive near West Byers Place in the Baker neighborhood.

DENVER — Police said on Thursday that they arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a deadly road rage shooting last week.

Chyon Kendrick was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was taken into custody on Wednesday. Jail records show Kendrick is being held without bond.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim, Fernando Alvarez-Chacon, 35, was in a Ford F-250 driving north on Interstate 25 last Thursday, trying to exit onto Santa Fe Drive.

An Enterprise box truck was blocking the exit lane and not letting Alvarez in. Alvarez eventually exited and was going to turn left onto West Alameda Avenue from South Santa Fe Drive. The box truck driver turned his signal on, trying to get in front of Alvarez, but Alvarez blocked him from getting into his lane, the affidavit says.

Alvarez and the box truck driver exchanged words, and Alvarez got out of his truck, the affidavit says. Witnesses told police Alvarez threw punches at the driver of the box truck.

Alvarez then ran back to his truck and began driving north on South Santa Fe Drive. A white Chevy Malibu with temporary tags pulled up next to the drivers' side and fired a round, striking Alvarez on the left side of his body, according to the affidavit.
