DENVER — A Denver woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a string of attempted armed carjackings in which she fired shots in the air and at victims, the U.S. Attorney's Office said on Friday.

Alexis Dicarlo, 24, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court. In addition to prison time, she was also sentenced to five years of supervised release for the series of crimes on Feb. 27, 2023, in the area of East Hampden Avenue and South Dahlia Street.

“Let this be a warning to those who commit violent crimes in our community that we will leverage our federal partnerships, when appropriate, to achieve the greatest possible consequences for offenders,” said Denver Chief of Police Ron Thomas, according to a news release. “We are grateful to our partners at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado for their great work achieving a 20-year sentence in this case.”

On the day of the attempted carjackings, Denver Police officers initially responded to a report of shots fired and found several victims in a parking lot.

One of them told police he saw a piece of clothing on the ground next to a vehicle with a Florida license plate. As he got closer, he thought that it belonged to a coworker who recently had his vehicle broken into. The man saw Dicarlo gathering items from the truck's driver's side, according to the affidavit in the case.

He and his coworker confronted her, and she pointed a handgun at them. Both men said they ran away out of fear.

Dicarlo left with several bags she had taken from the truck and tried to carjack someone else. A man who was sitting in his car said she pointed a handgun at him and demanded his keys. Fearing for his safety, he got out of the vehicle and handed Dicarlo a set of keys that did not belong to his vehicle. He said he ran away as she struggled to start his car, according to the affidavit.

After failing to start the car, Dicarlo ran toward a gas station and approached two brothers who were at a gas pump. According to the affidavit, she demanded both their wallets and fired a shot at one of the brothers as he exited their truck.

She then ran toward the parking lot of another nearby business and tried to carjack two other people. The first victim said a woman pointed a gun at her and demanded her keys, but she could not find the key fob in her purse and the woman ran off.

Another man said he was eating lunch in his truck when Dicarlo opened his door and "put the muzzle of a handgun in his face," the affidavit says. He reported that he was told to get out of his truck as she fired a single shot into the air.

At that point, police arrived, and Dicarlo went into a chiropractic business. She approached a front desk employee and demanded their keys. The employee refused and Dicarlo pulled out her gun and fired a shot past the worker's head that went through the wall and into the neighboring business, the affidavit says.

After the gunshot, the worker complied and gave Dicarlo her keys. She was arrested by responding officers while she was trying to find the victim's car in the parking lot.

An officer broke their leg while trying to arrest Dicarlo. None of the other victims were physically harmed.

Investigators later found multiple firearms in bags that Dicarlo had. Two of the guns had been reported stolen. One of the bags also contained more than 100 pills that were suspected to be fentanyl.
