DENVER — A Denver Police officer broke a bone while attempting to arrest a woman who now faces numerous felony charges related to at least five attempted carjackings in Denver on Monday afternoon, including one during which she fired a shot past a woman's head.
Those details come from an arrest affidavit for 22-year-old Alexis Dicarlo from the Denver Police Department. (DPD) She is being held on suspicion of the following:
- Attempted first-degree murder
- Felony menacing
- Aggravated robbery
- Attempted aggravated robbery
- Second-degree assault on a peace officer
Officers initially responded to a report of shots fired around 1:30 p.m. Monday near East Hampden Avenue and South Dahlia Street and learned that a woman, later identified as Dicarlo, had tried to carjack multiple people, the affidavit says.
The officers found several victims in a parking lot. One of them saw a piece of clothing on the ground next to a vehicle with a Florida license plate. As he got closer he said he thought that it belonged to another coworker who recently had his vehicle broken into.
The man also saw a woman gathering items from the truck's driver's side, the affidavit says.
He and his coworker confronted her, and she pointed a tan handgun at them, according to the affidavit. Both men said they ran away out of fear.
The woman left with several bags she had taken from the truck and tried to carjack someone else, the affidavit says. A man who was sitting in his car said a woman pointed a tan handgun at him and demanded his keys. Fearing for his safety, he said he exited the vehicle and handed the woman a set of keys that did not belong to his vehicle. He said he ran away as the woman struggled to start his car, according to the affidavit.
After failing to start the car, the woman then ran toward a gas station and approached two brothers who were at a gas pump. According to the affidavit, she demanded both their wallets and fired a shot at one of the brothers as he exited their truck.
The woman then ran toward the parking lot of another nearby business and tried to carjack two other people. The first victim said a woman pointed a gun at her and demanded her keys, but she could not find the key fob in her purse and the woman ran off.
Another man said he was eating lunch in his truck when a woman opened his door and "put the muzzle of a handgun in his face," the affidavit says. He reported that he was told to get out of his truck as the woman fired a single shot into the air.
At that point, police arrived, and the woman fled and went into a chiropractic business. At that location, she approached a front desk employee and demanded their keys. The employee refused and the woman pulled out her gun and fired a shot past the worker's head which went through the wall and into the neighboring business, the affidavit says.
After the gunshot, the worker complied with demands and gave the woman her keys. The suspect was arrested by responding officers while trying to locate the victim's car in the parking lot.
An officer broke a bone while trying to arrest Dicarlo, but police did not provide additional details about the injury. None of the other victims were physically harmed.
Investigators later found multiple firearms in bags that Dicarlo had. Two of the guns had been reported stolen. One of the bags also contained more than 100 pills that are suspected to be fentanyl.
