Prosecutors disclose in court docs some of the 'most damning evidence' against dentist accused of poisoning wife

James Craig's mistress told police he talked about "getting rid of" his wife months before her death, according to prosecutors.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — A dentist accused of poisoning and killing his wife is trying to throw out evidence involving a recent interview with his mistress.

Documents filed by prosecutors and obtained by 9NEWS Investigates say James Craig shared his desire to kill his wife months before her death.

Craig is accused of killing his wife, 43-year-old Angela Craig, by poisoning her protein shakes. Angela Craig died March 1, 2023, after ingesting lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, according to an autopsy report from the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.

Craig is also facing a charge of solicitation to commit tampering with physical evidence. Court documents filed by prosecutors say he wrote a set of fake journal entries to his children claiming that a month before Angela Craig died, she asked him to research and procure poisons.

In late April, Craig's defense team filed a motion to dismiss all charges against him, citing "outrageous government conduct." If that doesn't work, he requested the court exclude all statements made by his mistress. His attorneys said they are not admissible at trial because the statements were coerced.

In a response to the motion, prosecutors shared details on what they call some of the "most damning evidence against him" -- statements by one of his mistresses.

Earlier this year, police interviewed the mistress. Court documents filed by prosecutors say she told officers Craig made dark comments about getting rid of his wife. He went on to talk about poisons and injection as a potential method of murder, records claim, and he brought it up at least five times.

She said Craig made these comments in late 2022. Angela - a mother to six children - died in March 2023.

Craig was arrested the next day. While he was in county jail, investigators say, he tried to cover up the crime.

In a letter to a family member, the documents filed by prosecutors say, Craig asked the family member to manufacture a "deep fake video" of Angela asking him to get poisons for her. The records say Craig stressed the video must appear to have been taken on Feb. 27, 2023, which is the day he first began researching poisons on a computer in his dentist office.

The documents filed by prosecutors say Craig is falsely claiming his wife asked him to get poisons for her so she could either commit suicide or engage in a "suicidal game of chicken" aimed at dissuading Craig from divorcing her.

Craig's defense team said in their motion that detectives resorted to psychologically coercive tactics, and only after using those tactics did the mistress offer "useful" information. The prosecution's motion says a detective and deputy district attorney called the mistress to follow up in May 2024. When asked if she felt coerced in any way, she stated, "No! Not at all. I talked to you voluntarily. I know I had that choice."

Craig's next court appearance is June 5.
