CENTENNIAL, Colo. — An Aurora dentist accused of killing his wife faces another felony charge.
Prosecutors said James Craig, who's accused of poisoning his wife's protein shakes and killing her, tried to fabricate evidence while in county jail with the help of another inmate. A detective with the Aurora Police Department testified Wednesday during a preliminary hearing about her conversation with witness Kacy Bohannan.
After the hearing, the judge felt there was enough evidence to proceed with the new charge of solicitation to commit tampering with physical evidence. Craig is facing a similar charge after the prosecution said he tried to persuade a family member to tamper with evidence.
Bohannan called the detective last summer and told the detective he was in custody at the Arapahoe County Jail at the same time as Craig, the detective testified. According to her testimony, Bohannan said Craig asked him to place letters at his house that would appear to be written by his wife, Angela Craig, saying she wasn't happy with life and that she was suicidal.
Bohannan was under the impression James was writing the letters, the police detective said, and Craig offered him free dental work or bail if he did this for him.
The detective said Bohannan told her Craig wanted someone, like police, to find the letters.
Craig is facing charges for poisoning and killing his wife. The story he told Bohannan was that his wife poisoned herself with cyanide, the detective said.
Craig's defense attorneys argued there were glaring credibility issues with Bohannan. A defense attorney said Bohannan had an active arrest warrant when he called the detective and that he shared some information with police that had already been published in the media.
The attorney suggested Bohannan received benefits from talking to police. After he reported Craig, the defense attorney said the district attorney's office that is prosecuting Craig gave Bohannan a lighter punishment after he attacked his girlfriend for a third time.
The police detective testified she didn't know Bohannan had an active warrant, and that Bohannan never tried to avoid arrest in giving statements and never asked police to wipe away his arrest warrant.
The judge felt there was enough evidence to proceed with the new charge. Craig is scheduled to go to trial in August.
Angela's brother, Mark Pray, shared a statement with 9NEWS after the preliminary hearing.
"The loss of Angie is a devastating blow to all who knew her vibrant spirit and boundless love. This latest attempt to frame her for her own murder, leaves us reeling in disbelief and anguish. In the face of such unfathomable cruelty, we are grateful to the Aurora detectives and the DA's office that are doing so much to get justice for our sister. Jim Craig's heinous actions must not go unpunished; the world demands accountability for such monstrous deeds. We will stand firm against the darkness, ensuring that Angie's memory is honored and that no more innocent lives fall prey to this evil man."
