DENVER — A man has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a series of carjackings and robberies in the Denver area.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado said Keenan Clodfelter, 20, has been indicted on 11 counts, including three counts of carjacking, three counts of robbery and five counts of brandishing a firearm.
According to the indictment, Clodfelter carjacked a 2013 Toyota Highlander in early October. On the same day, according to the indictment, he tried to carjack a Hyundai Genesis, resulting in a gunshot wound to the victim's arm.
On or around Nov. 20, according to the indictment, Clodfelter carjacked a 2010 Toyota Scion.
The indictment also charges Clodfelter in connection with the robberies of a 7-Eleven in Aurora and Pour Boy Liquor in Lakewood on Nov. 20, as well as the robbery of a Circle K in Denver the next day.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Lakewood Police Department.
Following these alleged crimes, Clodfelter was allegedly involved in a road rage incident in one of the carjacked vehicles.
On Nov. 21, Wheat Ridge Police said it received a call for shots fired around 4:20 p.m. near 44th Avenue and Youngfield Street.
Wheat Ridge police spokesperson Alex Rose said the situation began as a verbal argument before allegedly escalating to a life-threatening altercation.
"At a point, our suspect and our victim were out on the street, arguing with each other," Rose said. "Both parties go back to their vehicles and that's when the suspect allegedly grabbed a handgun from the vehicle he was driving, came back and allegedly fired two shots into our victim’s van."
Rose said the victim had injuries to his face due to broken glass, but was able to leave the scene. Clodfelter, the suspected shooter, avoided arrest that day.
Rose said it wouldn't be long before Clodfelter was found.
"The way that we were able to find this suspect is our crime analyst was able to identify that a similar vehicle matching the suspect's description was stolen, or reported stolen, out of Aurora the day before," Rose said.
Jefferson County court documents said the car Clodfelter was driving Nov. 21 during the alleged road rage altercation was a 2010 Toyota Scion.
Documents said the stolen vehicle was recovered the next day.
Clodfelter was later taken into custody for first-degree motor vehicle theft.
Wheat Ridge Police asked the district attorney to add attempted first degree murder and illegal discharge of a firearm charges from the Nov. 21 incident.
Clodfelter is set to appear in Jefferson County court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 31. He's due in federal court on Feb. 20.
