Shots fired outside of Centennial Walmart

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office said a bystander fired shots outside of the car care center of the Walmart at 10900 E. Briarwood Ave.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Someone fired a gun at a car theft suspect at an Arapahoe County Walmart, which caused quite a commotion Tuesday afternoon.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office said one of its deputies happened to be at the store on East Briarwood Avenue just off Arapahoe Road and reported seeing people running from the store.

Deputy John Bartmann said in addition to the deputy already on scene, just before 1 p.m., a 911 call came from inside the store about the gunfire. He said about a dozen deputies responded.

The car's owner ran into the car care center at the Walmart screaming that someone had taken their car. Another person in the car care center ran outside and fired at the stolen car, the sheriff's office said.

Bartmann said investigators don't believe the suspect fired back.

The sheriff's office on Wednesday released photos of a person they are hoping to identify in connection with the car theft. It's unclear how that person may have been connected to the theft.

A witness inside the store at the time of the shooting told 9NEWS people ran for cover after hearing gunshots.

"It was a quick reaction, I guess," the witness said. "Never been involved in anything like that, but everybody just ducked and tried to get away from there."

The witness said eventually a voice came over the intercom, telling everyone to get out. The building was evacuated and closed to the public for several hours after the shooting.

The sheriff's office had initially said the car's owner had been carjacked and had fired at least one round at their own car. The sheriff's office also initially reported the stolen car was a Toyota Prius but later updated that the stolen car was actually a grey Honda Civic.

9NEWS was told the Civic may have two bullet holes in the passenger side door.

Investigators said it's possible the suspect failed to carjack another vehicle in the same parking lot, before taking the grey Honda Civic.
