WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A woman is in custody and two law enforcement officers injured after an hours-long standoff in Westminster came to an end.
Police said this started when an Adams County Sheriff's deputy came out to The Brodie Apartment complex near 121st Avenue and Zuni Street to serve an eviction notice to the woman at her apartment. Westminster Police said the suspect then stabbed the deputy and barricaded herself inside the apartment.
After hours of negotiating between law enforcement and the suspect, the standoff came to an end just before 5 p.m. Friday.
Sergeant Ray Esslinger said the woman induced several self-inflicted wounds before being arrested. In the process of arresting her, a seasoned member of the Westminster Police Department was injured, Sgt. Esslinger said.
For hours, residents in the apartment complex waited outside for answers.
“That is crazy to think about that," said Nicole Quesada, who lives in the apartment complex.
Quesada said she was shocked to come home only to find the apartment complex, where she lives with her husband Miguel, blocked off by Westminster Police in the middle of a standoff.
“I actually just came home from work and actually saw all the caution tape and police everywhere and ended up calling him, telling him, 'Don’t come in through the front, you gotta come in through the back,'” Quesada said.
The standoff started Friday morning, when the deputy came to serve an eviction warrant on a woman living in an apartment. Police said the woman then stabbed the deputy.
The deputy suffered some puncture wounds to his arm, according to Adams County Sheriff's Sergeant Adam Sherman.
Brodie Apartments were blocked off for hours as police negotiators tried to convince the woman to come out of her apartment and surrender.
Friday evening, officers were able to go in.
“Entry was made into the apartment. The suspect was arrested. Before she was arrested, she induced several self-inflicted wounds to herself," Sgt. Esslinger said. "She was then placed in handcuffs, brought downstairs and provided medical attention and immediately taken to the hospital to be treated for those injuries."
Westminster Police said the woman was the only person in the apartment at the time but two dogs were taken from the home.
“There was two dogs that were removed from the scene, our animal management responded and removed those two animals, and those animals were unharmed,” Sgt. Esslinger said.
During the arrest, a Westminster Police Officer was hurt. He too was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said the suspect, the injured Westminster Officer and the deputy who was stabbed are all expected to survive.
“The deputy did have to undergo surgery. The reports that we’ve received is that he’s okay,” Sgt. Esslinger said.
“I hope the officer is going to be okay but it’s a dangerous situation all around, including for the person who did this," Quesada said.
Now, neighbors living at The Brodie Apartments say they want to see the apartment management step up to better protect residents to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
“More security. I mean, that’s what it is, for the price that we pay for these apartments in Colorado, it’s ridiculous about the least amount of security we do have here for things like this,” Quesada said.
Sgt. Esslinger said most residents will be able to go back home Friday night, but likely not everyone.
“There might be a few, and the reason for that is you can only imagine what happens when a sprinkler system goes off and you’re the unit below that. So we want to make sure that they’re safe when they go inside and the management is working with those residents,” Sgt. Esslinger said.
Westminster Police said management is working with the residents impacted and will be providing them a place to stay.
Police said on Tuesday that the woman, 33-year-old Stephanie Hadley, was released from the hospital and taken to jail. She is being held on charges of assault on a peace officer and failure or refusal to leave a premise, police said.
