CDOT selects contractor to rebuild collapsed portion of US 36

Kraemer North America will work to rebuild the damaged stretch of highway of eastbound US 36, which started sinking last week.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced it has selected a contractor to rebuild the portion of US 36 that collapsed.

Kraemer North America will work to rebuild the damaged portion of eastbound US 36 between Wadsworth Boulevard and 104th Avenue/Church Ranch Boulevard.

The eastbound lanes of US 36 have been closed since Friday and it will likely be some time before they're able to be repaired and then reopened. In the meantime, CDOT reconfigured traffic to allow two lanes of eastbound traffic on the westbound side in that area.

CDOT said the roadway will be rebuilt using a streamlined contracting mechanism called "Construction Manager/General Contractor" (CMGC) to get the damaged road rebuilt as safely and as efficiently as possible. GMGC is a competitive contracting method that can be utilized quickly, according to CDOT.

David Evans and RJ Engineering will prepare the design for rebuilding, and Kraemer will work with the design team to come up with the most feasible and final design of the project.

“Kraemer submitted a strong technical proposal and distinguished themselves in a competitive bidding process among several reputable firms,” said CDOT Chief Engineer Josh Laipply. “With their selection, we can now transition from incident response to the permanent repair of the road.”

CDOT said it will not have a construction cost available until after the design is complete.

A crack first appeared in the eastbound lanes last week and it soon led to a major collapse of a section of the retaining wall and roadway due to settlement issues.
