WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The bike path surrounding the area where US 36 is sinking is closed indefinitely amid safety concerns and construction, the Colorado Department of Transportation said. A detour is in place.
Commuting Solutions, based in Louisville, said CDOT and local city leaders determined the safest route around the closure. Commuting Solutions is a group dedicated to innovative transportation options that connect commuters to their workplaces.
The route takes cyclists along Promenade Drive, Westminster Boulevard and West 112th Avenue.
The eastbound lanes of US 36 have been closed since Friday and it will likely be some time before they're able to be repaired and then reopened. In the meantime, CDOT reconfigured traffic to allow two lanes of eastbound traffic on the westbound side in that area. That means there are just two lanes of travel in each direction on about a half-mile stretch of the highway.
A crack first appeared in the eastbound lanes last week and it soon led to a major collapse of a section of the retaining wall and roadway due to settlement issues.
