Bear euthanized that swiped at walker in Steamboat Springs

The person suffered minor abrasions after a bear swiped at them in Steamboat Springs.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A person is recovering after a bear swiped at them Tuesday morning in Steamboat Springs.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said the person reported that they were walking on a path that connects Walton Creek Road and Mt. Warner Circle near the Steamboat Ski Resort.

The person said they saw a yearling cub nearby and then felt a swipe from behind, knocking them to the ground. The person suffered minor abrasions and scrapes to their arm from the fall, according to a CPW spokesperson.

The victim finished their walk and called wildlife officers to tell them of the encounter, CPW said.

Wildlife officers set up bear traps around the area where the person was attacked and trapped a sow and two yearling cubs on Wednesday afternoon.

The sow was identified as the bear who swiped the person and was euthanized, according to CPW. Wildlife officials determined the cubs were old enough to survive on their own, so they were relocated and released. CPW said they believe there was another cub in the area, but they will not attempt to trap it since they believe it can survive on its own.

Officers placed signage in the area warning people of increased bear activity, CPW said.

CPW reminds people who go out in nature to remain alert, keep your dog leashed and know what to do if you do encounter a bear.

They said people should not run if they see a bear. Stay still, remain calm and slowly back away until the bear is out of sight. If people see bear cubs, the mother is usually close by. In that situation, CPW said people should leave the area immediately.
