DENVER — Going to a Broncos game is an experience where fans expect to be entertained – from the sights on the massive new big screen to the sounds from the cheerleaders and the smells of dozens of tempting food options. There's also a man who sets the mood for game day, playing the music fans hear in the stadium.
DJ Squizzy Taylor reads the room, listens, observes and feels the space.
"It’s picking your poison, picking your moments and just really believing in the record, you know what I'm saying," Taylor said. "But when it hits, it’s an awesome feeling for sure."
It's Taylor's job to match big moments to music.
"Music is everything to me," Taylor said. "No matter what you're going through in your day or in life, music can change that like this (snaps fingers) at least for a moment. You know what I'm saying? You could be having the worst day and put on the right song and you'll forget all your problems at least for five minutes."
A longtime Denver radio host and DJ, Taylor is a hit in the Mile High music scene.
He knew his love of music would get him somewhere.
"I knew it would get me somewhere – I didn’t know 77,000 people," he said. "But I knew I could make a name for myself and provide for my family through it, though."
Taylor said rumor has it that some of the Broncos players recommended him for the gig.
"I'm really cool to a lot of the players," he said. "I don't know which ones, but that's the rumor."
Now he's the official DJ for the Denver Broncos and their die-hard fans.
You can find Taylor in section 135 inside the DJ booth where he spins a song for the warmups and the fans as they settle into the stands.
"There's kids maybe 5 and there's people that may be 70, so having a wide variety of music is super important," Taylor said. "The way I look at it, no matter what's going on on the field, the energy's up and it has to be high in here, you know what I'm saying?"
Every game should be entertaining – and Taylor doesn't let Broncos Country down.
"I want to be like a staple in the stadium, not the mascot, but you know you come to a Broncos game, it's also the Squizzy Taylor Experience," he said. "So it's my job to just feel the vibe and see what we come up with."
And when the moment is especially sweet?
"I read the room, and I think the fun part about DJ-ing, it's not overthinking it or being too prepared prior. You kinda gotta live in the moment," he said.
When the Kansas City Chiefs recently went down in defeat at Empower Field, Taylor just read the room for inspiration -- playing Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off."
"It was a team effort, I'll just put it as that," Taylor said. "It made sense and the stars aligned at the right time and we took advantage of the situation."
