DENVER — A cold front is expected to bring some thunderstorms to the Front Range on Wednesday, and a few of those storms will have the potential to become severe.
A severe thunderstorm is one capable of producing wind gusts stronger than 58 mph or hail one inch in diameter or larger.
Labor Day weekend usually marks the unofficial end to severe weather season in Colorado, as some of the storm ingredients like moisture and instability become limited.
There is a very clear four-month severe weather season in Colorado, from May through August. There's significantly less severe weather by the start of September.
As far as the season goes as a whole, this year was the third most active out of the last seven severe weather seasons, with more than 800 total severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings issued in the state of Colorado.
