Aurora, Centennial, Parker hit by heavy rain, hail and lightning

Severe storms flooded streets, dumped hail and sparked a house fire on the south side of the Denver metro Sunday.

DENVER — Heavy rain and hail blanketed the south Denver metro area as storms moved through Sunday afternoon.

The precipitation flooded roads, driveways and yards around Aurora, Centennial and Parker.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued as the storms passed through the area.

Around 6 p.m., a fire started at a home in the Pinery neighborhood in Douglas County. The homeowners called 911 and said smoke filled their attic after their house was struck by lightning. When firefighters arrived, the attic was engulfed in flames, and part of the roof had collapsed.

South Metro Fire Rescue said it took about an hour to get the fire under control.

"Getting ground ladders to where they need to be safely, especially when the ground is really wet, it can add some fall hazards and things like that," South Metro Fire spokesperson Eric Hurst said. "So just in general it's a hazardous incident. Certainly when firefighters arrived we were still in the middle of a severe thunderstorm warning and a flash flood warning that were simultaneously occurring here. So kind of a hazardous afternoon for the folks here."

No injuries were reported from the fire.

Two other houses were also struck by lightning in the storms Sunday, but those strikes didn't spark any fires, South Metro said.

South Metro firefighters also responded to two cars stuck in floodwater on Hess Road at Pardee Street in Parker. No one was injured in that incident, firefighters said.

Monday will have more cloud cover, and we'll be a bit cooler as a result. Highs top out around 80 with yet another round of afternoon showers and storms, with a limited risk for severe weather.

We start to dry out on Tuesday, with only isolated afternoon showers and storms and a high in the low 80s (seasonal) once again. The severe weather risk looks lower on Tuesday also.
