School closures and delays on Thursday in Colorado

Dozens of Colorado schools and businesses have closed or delayed their opening on Thursday after snow piled up along the Front Range.

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Dozens of Colorado school districts and businesses have announced closures and delays for Thursday.

Winter Storm Watches are up for most of the Denver metro area for a significant winter storm. The next storm system headed to Colorado will likely bring six inches or more of snow on Friday and Saturday.

The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team issued a Weather Impact Day from Thursday through Saturday morning for the significant snow storm.

Douglas County School District, Akron School District R-1, Bennett School Dist. 29-J, Byers School Dist. 32-J, Elizabeth School District, Elbert School District 200, Limon Public Schools and Yuma School District 1 are among the closures Thursday.

On Thursday, the same upper-level low that's been spinning up snow and clouds since Tuesday will continue to churn up heavier snow along and south and east of the Palmer Divide, south of Denver.

Areas from Castle Rock and Limon on south and east will likely have steady snow through Thursday, with a few more inches of accumulation likely. Winter Storm Warnings continue across the eastern plains of Colorado.

Meanwhile in the Denver metro area, most will probably only have flurries and lighter snow through the day Thursday, with an additional 1-3 inches possible, especially south and east of downtown Denver.

The steadier snow moves into the Denver area late Friday morning, with moderate-to-heavy snow likely Friday afternoon and on Friday night and into Saturday morning.

Look for a widespread 4-8 inches of accumulation, with 10 inches or more possible in spots as well. This looks like a significant winter storm, and likely to be one of our biggest November snowstorms in recent memory.
