Mid-June blizzard on top of Pikes Peak

Colorado Springs had a crazy day of weather on Monday.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Is it January or June?

It was hard to tell on Pikes Peak Monday afternoon, when video captured a raging blizzard at the mountain's summit.

The video was taken by Stephen "Pete" Peterson, a ranger on the peak. He said the conditions lasted for about four hours and that luckily no one was injured due to the sudden white-out.

Summer snow is no stranger to America's Mountain, but a full-fledged mid-June blizzard just might be.

The prominent peak saw winds that likely topped 40 mph on Monday afternoon, along with heavy snow at times. An upper-level area of low pressure spinning across eastern Colorado helped produce the snow and wind atop Pikes Peak.

Meanwhile, about 50-75 miles east of the top of the 14,115-foot mountain, large hail and Tornado Warnings hammered Colorado Springs. The city of Colorado Springs saw its wettest two-day period on record between Sunday and Monday, with nearly five-and-a-half inches of rain over those two days alone (most of which fell on Monday).

At the same time in the mountains, snow appeared to fall as low as 11,000 or 12,000 feet on Tuesday. Snow-capped peaks were easily visible from Denver, as cool, cloudy conditions kept the Front Range's lower elevations feeling chilly once again.

The last six miles of the road to the Pikes Peaks summit were also closed on Tuesday due to icy conditions.
