ESTES PARK, Colo. — A picturesque Colorado mountain road is closing for winter.
The National Park Service said Old Fall River Road will close to vehicles for the winter season beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The Rocky Mountain National Park mountain road will be closed to all uses through Thursday, Oct. 10, for park staff to conduct road maintenance, the park staff said.

Old Fall River Road will temporarily reopen to bicycles, leashed pets and walkers Friday, Oct. 11, through Monday, Oct. 14.
From, Tuesday, Oct. 15, to Friday, Oct. 18, the road will close again to all uses for continued road maintenance. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the road will reopen to bicycles, leashed pets and walkers through Nov. 30.
The National Park Service said said leashed pets and bicycles are only allowed on the road, not on side trails. On Dec. 1, the road will revert to trail status and bicycles and leashed pets will not be allowed on the road.

Opening in 1920, Old Fall River Road was the first auto route in Rocky Mountain National Park offering access to the park's high country. Unlike Trail Ridge Road, the 11-mile, primarily gravel Old Fall River Road is a much more "motor nature trail," according to the National Park Service.
