Bachelor party chances I-70 during massive snowstorm

While many people stayed home - others chose to brave the snowy roadways.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A messy snowstorm along Interstate 70 won’t stop Billy and the boys from finding a good time. The group is driving to Salida for Billy Edwards’s bachelor party.

“Yeah, looking forward to it,” said Edwards. “It’s going to be great.”

Joe Ryerson is the ringleader of the group.

“I am the pilot,” said Ryerson. “I am a well-qualified van captain. I’ve been vanning for years.”

Patrick Chandler is just happy to be along for the ride.

“I’m going to be in the back and hope for the best,” said Chandler.

The group met at the Wooly Mammoth Park-N-Ride in Golden. Before piling into the van, they had to come up with a game plan.

“We’ll probably take I-70, head down through Leadville,” said Ryerson. “Could get a little hairy but we’ve got all our supplies in the van so we’re pretty well stacked.”

As the guys were heading out, Gray Hamilton was just getting in.

“When I-70 opened, we took the opportunity to come back down here before the highway closed again, as it does,” said Hamilton.

A group of travelers brave snowy conditions on I-70.

“Coming down the hill, it’s really slushy,” said Hamilton. “I saw a car almost get into an accident. If you’re going to drive up I-70, be prepared. Bring a shovel in case you go off the road because it is icy and have a plan.”

Ryerson and the rest of the guys were feeling pretty good about their chances.

“We’ve got chains and traction tracks, and we’ve got state of mind and a fortitude that has really never been seen in the state before, so,” said Ryerson with confidence.

Chandler said they’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at them.

“Well, we have about 300 beers and a bag of chips, so I think we’re good.”

The group made it to their destination safely.
