DENVER — Friday morning was the coldest October 11 in Denver history.
The low was a frigid 9 degrees, which absolutely smashed the previous record low of 22 degrees set in 1946.
That was only the tenth time our record low has been broken by more than 10 degrees since record-keeping began in the late 1800s.
The last time we broke a record low by 10 degrees or more was back in 2014. That year, on November 13 the overnight low was recorded at -14. That broke the previous record of -3, last set in 1916, by 11 degrees.
On February 18, 2006, Denver's low temperature dipped to -13, breaking the previous record of -3, last set in 1880, by 10 degrees.
Most of these extreme records were set during the fall and winter months. During that time we have better access to arctic air, and if it's timed just right, we can see an extreme temperature drop.
