DENVER — Hundreds of flights were delayed out of Denver International Airport on Monday afternoon due to storms in the area.
778 flights were delayed and 21 canceled as of 9:45 p.m. Monday, according to FlightAware.
DIA was on a ground delay. Departures were delayed an average of 63 minutes due to thunderstorms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Keely Chalmers said clouds will increase as we head through the day, with the potential for impactful storms this afternoon and evening.
The storms fired up in the foothills before moving into the Interstate 25 corridor, with heavy rain, gusty winds and damaging hail possible.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. for the following counties:
- Weld
- Logan
- Morgan
- Elbert
- Kit Carson
- Lincoln
- Cheyenne
- Washington
- Yuma
- Pueblo
- Crowley
- Otero
- El Paso
The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team said there is more monsoonal moisture in our air Monday, ramping up chances for damaging wind and large hail east of downtown Denver.
Chalmers said there's a 50% chance of storms for the Denver metro area on Monday. The storms may intensify as they move over the eastern plains.
The National Weather Service in Boulder said brief heavy rains may lead to localized flash flooding, especially over the burn scar areas.
