Denver sets new record high for July 12

Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to again hit 100 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, possibly breaking two more daily heat records in Denver.

DENVER — Friday's official temperature in Denver hit 102. The previous record of 101 was set in 1971.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories in Colorado along most of the Interstate 25 corridor, Denver metro area, and eastern plains from 10 a.m. Friday and continuing through the weekend.

The temperature hit 100 degrees right around 1 p.m. but expect there to be unusual and impactful high heat in the upper 90s between noon and 8 p.m. There is an opportunity for some brief cloud cover in the late afternoon hours but likely not enough to provide much relief from the heat.

Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to again hit 100 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, possibly breaking two more daily heat records in Denver. That's significant heat given that temperature records in the Denver area go back 152 years.

Monday is not under an advisory, but it'll stay hot, with highs likely reaching the upper 90s. As the ridge of high pressure that's causing the heat wave starts to break down on Monday afternoon, that will open the door for some moisture to return to the Front Range.

There will be isolated storm chances on Monday and then more widespread on Tuesday with even some potential for severe weather. Temperatures will also be cooler with highs below 90 degrees on Wednesday.

Denver is likely to reach 100 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday could also see a high in the upper 90s.

While hitting 100 degrees in the city isn't uncommon during the summer, it is rare to have two or more days in a row with a high of 100 degrees.
