DENVER — The Mile High City was baking Sunday afternoon, setting a record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in the city on Aug. 4.

Denver International Airport officially reached 102 degrees just after 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

That mark breaks the previous Aug. 4 record of 98 degrees, which was previously reached in 2022, 1981 and 1979.

Sunday was the fifth day that Denver tied or broke a heat record this summer, according to NWS data. The others were June 12, July 13, July 15 and July 29.

Denver has had six 100-degree days this summer -- the third-highest number ever.

Sunday was Denver's 12th 90-degree day in a row, and and that streak is likely to continue for a few more days.

It will remain hot for the first half of the week with highs in Denver hitting the low to middle 90s between Monday and Wednesday. We'll see a chance for showers and storms each afternoon, with Tuesday potentially bringing a few strong to severe storms that could produce large hail.

A dramatic shift in the weather pattern will arrive starting on Thursday with highs dropping about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year as well as a better chance to get some measurable rain.
