Denver ties daily record low: Here's how low the mercury dropped at the airport

After more than 72 hours below freezing, the mercury at Denver International Airport fell even lower early Tuesday.

DENVER — More than three days of below-freezing temperatures culminated with a record-tying low in Denver early Tuesday.

The overnight low temperature at Denver International Airport fell to -19 degrees Fahrenheit at 12:34 a.m. Tuesday. That reading tied the daily record low for Jan. 16 which was previously set in 1930.

The reading of -19 degrees tied Denver's coldest January temperature since 1963 and tied the second-coldest overall temperature since 1990.

The National Weather Service said the temperature at Denver's airport also dropped to -19 degrees Fahrenheit before midnight, shy of the Jan. 15 record of -20 degrees.

The arctic air that has hovered over Colorado since Friday is due to leave the area on Tuesday when highs will warm into the 30s in Denver.

The 9NEWS Weather team said cloudy skies return to Denver on Wednesday, but temperatures will rise until a cold front moves through the area late Thursday, cooling Denver area highs back into the 30s while scattering a few snow showers.

Denver will warm back into the 40s on Saturday and the low 50s by Sunday.
