Denver's air quality is among the worst in the world on Tuesday

Ground ozone will only make Colorado's air quality worse as smoke from Canadian wildfires prompts health alerts.

DENVER — The air quality in Denver is among the worst in the world on Tuesday.

The only countries with worse air quality than Denver were cities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Peru, Malaysia, and Bahrain according to IQ Air.

As of 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, Denver had the 9th worst air quality among major cities globally.

Denver's air quality Tuesday morning was ranked as the worst in the United States.

Wildfire smoke from wildfires in Canada and the Pacific Northwest is impacting several states including Colorado on Tuesday.

Air Quality Alerts

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has issued Air Quality Alerts across Colorado, including Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer, and Weld Counties, until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

As more smoke enters Colorado, it is advised to limit time outdoors, especially for those with heart disease, respiratory illness, the very young and the elderly. The public is advised to try and limit that time outdoors and check real-time air quality here.

CDPHE said warm and stagnant weather, combined with increasing amounts of out-of-state wildfire smoke, has resulted in ozone and fine particulate matter concentrations to possibly reach unhealthy levels for air quality.

A ridge of high pressure has nudged into Colorado from the west. Tuesday's high temperatures will climb to around 90 degrees in Denver, near the seasonal average.

The smoke could improve slightly on Wednesday, but temperatures rise into the mid-90s in Denver. Colorado will get even hotter Thursday, with highs soaring into the upper 90s in Denver thanks to that ridge of high pressure anchoring overhead.
