WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A landspout tornado that touched down in Weld County early Friday night was the first reported tornado in Colorado this year.
The National Weather Service Boulder issued a tornado warning for the towns of Eaton and Lucerne just before 6:20 p.m. The warning was expired about 15 minutes later, but not before several 9NEWS viewers captured photos and video of a big cloud spinning over the area.
Landspouts typically form from the ground up toward the base of a cloud, and can happen when winds converge over a surface boundary, according to WeatherNation. Even though they are usually weaker than regular tornadoes, wind speeds inside a landspout can still reach up to 100 miles per hour.
They are more common on the Eastern Plains than they are in the Denver metro area, but can be difficult to forecast.
All tornado warnings for the area have since been canceled. There have not been any reports of injuries or damage to property.
