After a hail storm, experts told 9NEWS there are a few things people should keep in mind.

Carole Walker with the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association provides the following three tips:

1. Get in touch with your insurance company or agent immediately. “Understand that serious loses will take priority and when we have this size of hail, where over 50% of the cars are un-drivable, you need to be a little bit patient,” Walker explained.

2. Do not panic. “Make some temporary repairs and then hang on to those receipts so you can file them with your claim,” Walker said.

3. Make sure you know who you’re working with and check out their references. “Unfortunately severe weather season is scam season in Colorado,” she said. Be extra wary about roofers that come knocking at your door.

Hail is our most expensive insured catastrophe so far.

Walker said Colorado is ranked second in the nation, after Texas, for hail insurance claims.
