KUSA - A fast-moving thunderstorm brought strong winds and dumped heavy rain in the Denver area Friday night. Excessive runoff caused ponding of water on highways, streets and underpasses.

The storm also brought down trees and cut power to some areas of the metro. Police reported several trees fell in the area near East 7th Street and Monaco Parkway. Xcel reported more than 4,700 customers lost power in the area.

Strong winds ripped part of the roof off of a building at 870 S. Birch St. damaging a few parked cars and apartment windows.

Heavy rain also caused street flooding in many parts of Denver Friday night. Colorado Boulevard at East Exposition Avenue was closed because of the deluge. Flooding was also reported near 38th and Wynkoop streets.

Authorities encouraged people to not try to drive through moving water if they can't see the bottom. Roads can be washed out beneath the flooded areas, so drivers should use caution.

There were no reports of injuries. The storm moved to the northeast part of the state.

Earlier Friday, severe weather produced tornadoes, hail and heavy rain across the Front Range and on the Eastern Plains.

A tornado was spotted Friday afternoon near Kirk in Yuma County. There were no reports of injuries. Christopher Monahan captured video of the twister.

The National Weather Service says a large tornado touched down in Elbert County earlier Friday. The twister later lifted, and no damage was reported.

A tornado watch that was issued for much of eastern Colorado has expired, but there is a possibility of flooding overnight and into the weekend.

A partly cloudy Saturday morning will lead to storms developing in the late afternoon and evening. Severe weather is possible again on Saturday.

Very wet weather will develop in western Colorado which could also bring flooding and landslides to the West Salt Creek area in Mesa County through Monday afternoon.
