DILLON, Colo. — A winner has been declared in the race to be the first Colorado ski area to open for the winter season.
Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opened for the 2023/24 winter season Sunday morning.
Lines of people gathered at the ski area get a run in on the first day. Colorado winter sports legends Nate Dogggg and Trailer Tom were again the first to ride the lifts Sunday morning, continuing their streak.
The Dillon ski area said it will operate seven days a week with mid-mountain to base skiing for skiers and riders on High Noon via the Black Mountain Express.
A-Basin said High Noon is for intermediate (mountain blue) skiers and above; there will be no beginner area.
A storm system brought snow and cold temperatures to Colorado from late Friday into Sunday with impacts across the state from the mountains to the eastern plains, Denver area and Front Range. A Winter Storm Warning was issued for Colorado's mountains, with up to 24 inches of snow possible in a few areas. Colorado's mountains saw at least 8 to 18 inches of snow.
Arapahoe Basin said it received 11 inches of new snow.
