Colorado ski area to open Sunday

The first major winter storm of the season is expected to bring 8 to 18 inches of snow to the mountains of Colorado this weekend.

DILLON, Colo. — The race to be the first Colorado ski area to open for the winter season is on.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area announced it will open for the 2023/24 winter season on Sunday.

The Dillon ski area said when it opens it will operate seven days a week with mid-mountain to base skiing for skiers and riders on High Noon via the Black Mountain Express.

A-Basin said High Noon is for intermediate (mountain blue) skiers and above; there will be no beginner area.

A storm system will bring snow and cold temperatures to Colorado from late Friday into Sunday with impacts across the state from the mountains to the eastern plains, Denver area and Front Range.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Colorado's mountains, with up to 24 inches of snow possible in a few areas. Most of the mountains will see between 8 to 18 inches of snow, with strong winds making travel hazardous on Friday night and Saturday.

Snow will start in Colorado's mountains Friday night, and it'll start in Denver as early as Saturday morning. The heaviest snow in the Denver area will likely fall on Saturday afternoon and overnight into Sunday morning.

Areas that pick up six or more inches of snow could have downed trees and branches, especially if the metro area gets a higher snowfall event.

Much colder temperatures will arrive in Colorado late Friday and settle over the state throughout the weekend.
