STERLING, Colo. — Saturday's storm brought hail and heavy rain to Sterling and the surrounding area, flooding homes and other buildings in northeastern Colorado.
Logan County Emergency Manager Jerry Casebolt said the storm started between 4 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., and the flooding began about 30 minutes later. He said hail clogged the city's storm drains.
The basements of the Logan County Courthouse and the courthouse annex flooded, Casebolt said.
Outside of town, sheriff's deputies were using sandbags to shore up a flooded home. They evacuated a number of animals including pigs, sheep and horses. The fairgrounds were also flooded, so they had to take them to another location that wasn't affected.
"We're trying to do what we can," Casebolt said.
The National Weather Service in Boulder issued a Flash Flood Warning for an area that included Sterling, Iliff and Atwood until 9:15 p.m. NWS recommended moving to higher ground immediately and avoiding walking or driving through floodwaters.
The population of the affected area is nearly 18,000 people, NWS said.
