DENVER — Thunderstorms carrying heavy rain, strong winds and hail are moving through the Denver metro Saturday night.
The National Weather Service in Boulder issued a severe thunderstorm warning for an area that includes Denver, Thornton, Broomfield, Brighton and Westminster that was in effect until 9 p.m.
Another severe thunderstorm warning was issued for an area south of Denver that includes Centennial, Parker and Castle Rock. It called for 60 mph wind and penny-sized hail and expired at 9:45 p.m.
Denver Fire said it received 90 calls for service between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday night, including 15 to 20 water rescues that were mostly people trapped in cars. The department said it averages 300 days a day.
NWS is urging residents to take shelter and take large hail precautions.
