Severe weather hits Denver area

A storm dropped golf-ball-sized hail on the west Denver suburbs -- including Red Rocks, where more than 100 people were injured by hailstones the night before.

DENVER — A second day of severe storms brought rain, hail and a tornado to the Denver area Thursday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm dropped golf-ball-sized hail on the west Denver suburbs -- including at Red Rocks, where more than 100 people were injured by hailstones the previous night. Thursday's hail fell hours before a concert scheduled at the venue that was put off until nearly 10 p.m. due to weather delays.

South Metro Fire Rescue said some people were injured by hail that fell at Chatfield State Park Thursday. That was before a tornado hit nearby Highlands Ranch.

Lakewood activated its warning sirens to warn people about the hail, police said

A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for much of eastern and central Colorado through 9 p.m. Thursday.

"Conditions are coming together for very large hail to hit Denver in the next 2-4 hours!," the National Weather Service said at 1:40 p.m. "Have a plan to take shelter if you are under a warning! These storms will be very dangerous with hail, lightning, flooding, and perhaps a tornado or two all possible."

The storms come after a day and night of severe weather that killed one person and injured several others Wednesday.

The storms caused delays and at least one ground stop Wednesday at Denver International Airport. Thursday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration is reporting an average delay of 118 minutes at the airport "due to thunderstorms."

An extended period of fair and more seasonal weather begins Friday and lasts through the weekend and into most of next week.
