St. Johns announces curfew ahead of Hurricane Dorian's arrival

The curfew, effective starting Tuesday at 8 p.m., is for Evacuation Zones A and B, the City of St. Augustine Beach, and the City of St. Augustine.

Law enforcement agencies in St. Johns County have announced a curfew for residents in mandatory evacuation zones ahead of Hurricane Dorian's arrival. 

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, a curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day until further notice. The curfew includes evacuation zones A and B, the City of St. Augustine Beach, and the City of St. Augustine. Mandatory evacuations for those areas went into effect Monday at 8 a.m. 

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, County Administrator Michael Wanchick warned residents to remain diligent in preparing for the storm. 

"We are still under a Hurricane Warning for all of St. Johns County," Wanchick said. "This is not the time to get casual or lower your guard as we go forward." 

A curfew order means that anyone on the street may be required to produce identification to law enforcement officers to verify their address and purpose for being in the area.

"We just want to encourage everyone to find a safe place to stay, hunker down, and pay attention because circumstances can and often do change unexpectedly," Wanchick said.  

Shelters in St. Johns County have opened at these locations: 

Pacetti Bay Middle School

Pedro Menendez High School

Osceola Elementary

  • 1605 Osceola Elementary Rd. (General population)

Curfews have also been issued in evacuation zones in Glynn County, Flagler County, Nassau County and for Jacksonville Beach.
