HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Jeff Duval wasn't alone when it comes to damage from the tornado in his Highlands Ranch neighborhood, but the 20-year-old is home alone without his parents.
"Well they’re in Europe," he said. "They’re in France right now with my grandpa and some family, and not here clearly."
They trusted him to look after the house and feed the cat. Now they have to trust that he's okay with a hole in his bedroom wall.
"So this is the chimney from the neighbor’s house," said Duval. "Somehow it came apart and we got a two-by-four from the chimney into the wall."
His parents also have to trust that he'll make good judgments as contractors constantly knock on his door asking for his business to clean up debris.
"Usually if it's like, well talk to your insurance, I just go get one of the neighbors who knows something about it because they’re actual adults, compared to me," laughed Duval.
These new responsibilities require waking up his parents at 3 a.m. in France.
"You’d be surprised how many people I’ve opened the door on today and they’re like, 'Can I talk to the homeowner?' And I just go, 'It’s me,'" said Duval.
When the tornado touched down, Duval was at work, but the security cameras on his garage captured it all.
"It's maybe 50 seconds or so," he said of the tornado blowing in and out of Prairie View Drive.
It captures his trees going down, and also damage to his neighbor's home across the street.
"I got a present for you, I got the footage," said Duval, after knocking on his neighbor's door.
Although he's technically the only one home, his neighbors have made sure he doesn't feel that way.
"That’s why we offered to help him yesterday because we were like, 'Oh no. you have to do this all by yourself,'" said one neighbor.
"Well, he was complaining his parents always abandon him," laughed another.
Although his parents were supposed to stay in Europe longer, his mom is boarding an early flight. She'll be home in two days.
"I’m an actual adult when there’s stuff that needs to get done that’s not above my pay grade," said Duval. "This is above my pay grade."
