DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Spears
Happy Sunday! The first of two pre-Thanksgiving storm systems will impact the state today. The first storm will stay north of us so the impact will be low and mostly confined to the mountains.
For Denver and the eastern plains, it will not be as warm today with highs mostly in the 50s. Westerly winds will turn more out of the north by the evening and they could be gusty at times due to an approaching cold front. Behind the front we could see some light snow showers after sunset and during the overnight hours. Any accumulation will be on the light side.
It's a different story in the mountains, especially along and north of Highway 50, where snow is expected to develop and become more widespread by late afternoon. It should snow into the overnight hours with accumulations averaging 5-10" on the higher peaks of our northern and central mountain ranges. Some travel impacts are anticipated, especially on higher passes along popular routes like I-70, U.S. 50 and U.S. 40.
The next storm will arrive on Tuesday and it should have a greater impact on the state, with moderate to heavy snow in the mountains and the potential for rain that will change to all snow in Denver during the day on Wednesday.
Our confidence level is high for widespread mountain snow with this next storm. The issue for Denver and the lower elevations is the development of precipitation and the arrival of a cold front. The timing of these two features will determine how much snow we could get and if we see any travel impacts around the city. Stay tuned for the latest!
