Major winter storm for the mountains starts tomorrow

A significant mountain snowstorm will lead to a widespread 1-2 feet of snow Tuesday and Wednesday, with some light snow for Denver.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

A significant mountain snowstorm is on the way, and it'll also pull in some snow into the Denver area for Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect major travel impacts most of Tuesday and Wednesday from this storm!

Our so-called appetizer storm left behind a few inches of snow in the mountains and a dusting to an inch across parts of the Denver area and Eastern Plains, but today will generally be fairly quiet. Highs in Denver reach the upper 40s with mainly sunny skies.

Our Pacific storm starts to stream in snow into the high country later tonight and especially early tomorrow, with steady snow likely by dawn tomorrow morning across the mountains.

Snow will be heavy at times and fall most of the day tomorrow, likely leading to significant travel impacts, especially for the second half of the day and overnight into Wednesday morning. If you have to travel, give yourself tons of extra time and use all winter driving precautions: Fill up to a full tank, have a winter survival kit in your car, use snow tires, and drive extra cautiously. And of course, give yourself tons of extra time as well!

In Denver, clouds increase on Tuesday ahead of our next storm. We get some rain/snow that'll likely flip to all snow overnight into Wednesday morning, with a few slushy inches of accumulation likely, mostly on Wednesday morning. It'll snow most of Wednesday with little or no additional accumulation with mild temperatures (for snow standards).

Higher totals are likely west and south of Denver above 6,000 feet in elevation, where a few spots could pick up more than six inches of accumulation by the time the snow winds down later on Wednesday.

We clear out and turn chilly but quiet for Thanksgiving. Look for lots of cold sunshine and a high in the 30s, and that generally cold pattern will last most of the week.

Prepare for a big mountain snowstorm and at least some snow in Denver as well!
