An increase to RTD bus and rail line fares took effect early Wednesday morning. These changes were approved by the board in September.
The new RTD fares took effect at 3 a.m. which was the start of the Jan. 2 service day.
Local fares increased from $2.60 to $3, the regional fare increased from $4.50 to $5.25 and the fare to Denver International Airport increased from $9 to $10.50.
Riders who qualify for half-price discount fares include seniors (65 and older), individuals with disabilities and Medicare recipients. RTD’s new half-price discount fares are:
- $1.50 for Local
- $2.60 for Regional
- $5.25 for a trip to or from Denver International Airport (which also can be used as a Regional day pass)
The discount fares for youth increased to 70 percent off the regular fare. Those between 6 and 19 years old qualify for these tickets. Up to three children 5 and younger will continue to ride free with a fare-paying adult.
- 90 cents for Local
- $1.60 for Regional
- $3.20 for a trip to or from Denver International Airport (which also can be used as a Regional day pass)
Aside from the fare changes, these changes pave the way for a low-income fare program, which will provide a 40 percent discount to households at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. This program is slated to take effect in July.
The rest of the changes include:
- Continuation of the EcoPass, Neighborhood EcoPass and CollegePass, which will be priced based upon trips taken.
- Introduction of a 3-hour pass, which would replace a 3-hour one-way transfer.
- 10-Ride ticket books and MyRide smart cards with discounts are retained.
- Day and monthly passes and FlexPass will also still be available.
- RTD is discontinuing the ValuPass (those interested instead could purchase 12 monthly passes).
- The fare policy changes are projected to reach fare revenue target levels over the next three years.
