Colorado highway reopens after vehicles get caught in mudslide

Eastbound and westbound CO 82 is reopened between Red Canyon Road and County Road 114 after a mudslide closed the road over the weekend.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — CO 82 is open in both directions after a mudslide closed the road over the weekend. Eastbound lanes reopened early Monday morning and westbound lanes opened Monday afternoon.

The Colorado Department of Transportation had crews working to reopen Highway 82 between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale.

On Saturday night, CDOT said CO 82 was closed about five miles south of Glenwood Springs around mileposts five and six.

Monday morning, CDOT reported eastbound lanes of CO 82 had reopened between Red Canyon Road and County Road 114. Drivers headed westbound from Aspen toward Glenwood Springs will continue to use the County Road 154 bypass.

CDOT said some vehicles were caught in the slide but have since been recovered, and no injuries were reported.

An alternate route is in place using County Road 154 (Old State Highway 82 Bypass) which runs adjacent to CO 82.

Crews worked overnight Saturday to cut a trench through rock debris to allow water to flow away from flooded areas. They are continuing to work to clear three- to four-foot-deep debris containing rocks and mud that impacted a 3/4-mile stretch of the highway.

Crews were using three front-loaders, a backhoe and nine trucks hauling debris to clear the road.

CDOT said they hope to have the highway back open by noon Monday.
