DENVER - The planes at Denver International Airport are getting some company.
On Friday, the first two electric commuter rail cars of the East Rail line arrived at DIA. They departed on their new tracks from Union Station to the airport at 8:05 a.m., kicking off a year-long schedule of testing prior to next year's opening.
The rail cars will be pulled by a powered "track-mobile" at 10 mph so that crews with Denver Transit Partners can monitor the track and vehicle conditions. The cars will not operate with overhead electrical power until later on in April. That will happen on the Pena Boulevard section of the new rail line.
The rail cars will eventually shuttle passengers to and from the airport from Denver. The East Rail line is expected to start operations in 2016.
