More than 700 delays at DIA after morning snow squall

Denver International Airport experienced hundreds of delays after a snow squall moved through the metro area Tuesday morning.

DENVER — More than 700 flights were delayed at Denver International Airport after a snow squall Tuesday morning caused a temporary ground stop.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the ground stop due to snow and ice was lifted about 11 a.m., but delays persisted at Denver's airport throughout the day.

There are 767 reported delays in and out of Denver International Airport (DIA) as of 8:46 p.m., according to FlightAware. The majority of the delays are Southwest Airlines and United Airlines flights.

Snow began falling along Colorado's Front Range and in the Denver metro area Tuesday morning and dropped an inch or two of snow. The greatest travel impacts from this storm system will be in the mountains west of Denver.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Avalanche Warning for portions of the mountains, especially areas above 9,000 feet. Snow and blowing snow are likely with 6 to 12 inches of accumulation.

Southbound lanes of Pena Boulevard were closed Tuesday morning at Tower Road as police responded to a crash involving multiple vehicles, according to Denver Police. The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. and there were no reports of serious injuries, police said.

Tuesday's airport travel delays come a day after hundreds of flights were canceled and delayed at DIA while strong, gusty winds impacted the region.

There were at least 886 reported delays in and out of DIA on Monday, according to FlightAware.

A spokesperson for DIA said the cause for the flight delays was wind. Monday's strong winds were forecasted to be 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service in Denver had issued a Red Flag Warning for most of eastern Colorado, including the Denver metro area, for wind and low relative humidity during the day on Monday.

TSA Security Wait Times

DIA also dealt with long TSA security lines Monday morning.

At 9 a.m. Monday, the wait time at West Security topped 40 minutes for standard screening while the wait for TSA PreCheck was greater than 20 minutes.

TSA said there was an extremely high number of travelers departing from Denver Monday morning. About 37,000 passengers were projected to be screened between 5 a.m. and noon, according to TSA. That number is more than half of an average day's total.

Bridge Security and South Security also topped a wait time of greater than 15 minutes, as of 9 a.m. Monday.

Current security wait times are posted at FlyDenver.com.

DIA officials recommend passengers should arrive inside the airport at least two hours before their scheduled boarding time. Passengers should also check with their airline to confirm their flight is on time and check-in online if possible.

Passengers can also reach out to the airport's customer service team at 720-730-4359 or by texting 720-902-9351. Denver airport travelers can connect via chat between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily.
