DENVER — Denver International Airport (DIA) on Monday announced the site for a future one-stop shop for car rentals at the airport.

The rental car companies at DIA need more room to meet the growing number of passengers going through the airport, DIA said in a news release. There are five rental car brands on-site and several off-site that serve DIA. The existing sites have not had significant improvement since the airport opened, DIA said.

Three sites were evaluated for a consolidated facility, and the airport determined the current employee lot along 78th Avenue, north of Pena Boulevard, has the most benefits for future growth, DIA said.

The current rental car program has 12,760 parking spaces. With the influx of passengers, DEN will need 16,130 parking spaces, a 26% increase, according to DIA.

The new facility would provide a "one-stop shop" for all rental car companies and easier access for customers, according to DIA. Because the facility will have multiple levels, it won't requires as much land.

“Having a [consolidated rental car facility] will provide much-needed room for growth, a better customer experience and a more sustainable program, especially if coupled with a people-moving solution to eliminate rental car shuttles,” said Phil Washington, the airport's CEO. “Introducing the ConRAC concept to DEN is a better operational system for managing industry changes.”

Funding for the rental car facility is supported through fees paid by rental car customers at DIA.

The five on-site rental car companies that serve DIA are Avis, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz and Sixt.
