DIA to receive millions more in funding to replace its baggage handling system

The airport is receiving $26.6 million through the Airport Terminal Program, created by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

DENVER — At Denver International Airport, the new year began with a headache. Not only did winter weather cause cancellations at airports across the country in early January, DIA’s aging baggage handling system broke down, disrupting operations further.

Now plans to fix that infrastructure are getting another boost with a just-announced federal grant.

The airport is receiving $26.6 million through the Airport Terminal Program, created by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, to continue working on an overhaul of its baggage system.

The new system will enable faster processing times, reduce energy consumption and set the airport up to handle the growing volume of travelers is serves annually, U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette said in a news release.

“With these investments, DEN will continue to serve as a cornerstone of our region's economic prosperity and connectivity,” DeGette said in a news release.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also called the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021. The law allocated $5 billion toward competitive grants for airport terminal development projects that fix aging infrastructure.
