DENVER — A relic of a time gone by will soon meet its end at Denver International Airport.
The former toll plaza on Peña Boulevard will be deconstructed beginning Friday. Denver International Airport (DIA) said the plaza, built in 1993, was used from 1995 to 2000 so passengers traveling to and from the airport could pay a toll on the way out.
However, advances in technology and the construction of a new parking system eliminated the need for toll booths, and the building became obsolete in 2000.
The building also has been used as administrative offices and a storage facility. The airport said the building has sat idle for the past 20 years.
The airport said the deconstruction of the building will take six to eight weeks to complete, after which the site will be turned into dedicated turnaround lanes for emergency vehicles and airport snow removal equipment.
