DENVER — Anyone who has driven to Denver International Airport has likely gone past an abandoned-looking building on Peña Boulevard.
For 20 years, the building has sat idle with seemingly no purpose. DIA public information officer Ashley Forest said 30 years ago, the building was a toll plaza. When the airport opened in 1995, it was designed to allow passengers to pay the toll on their way out.
Eventually, tolls were moved closer the terminal parking lots, and the airport turned the toll plaza building into administrative offices, and then a storage facility, Forest said.
She said crews are deconstructing the building piece-by-piece, as part of the Waste No More ordinance in Denver.
"The site will be leveled, regraded, hydroseeded and turned into dedicated turnaround lanes for emergency vehicles and our snow removal equipment," she said.
Deconstruction started Friday morning. It should take about six to eight weeks to complete.
Forest said the materials from the building will be saved and potentially repurposed for another project in the future.
