WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — A driver is in custody after police said he caused a four-vehicle crash last week on Kipling Street near West 29th Avenue, police said.
On June 3, Wheat Ridge Police said the driver, later identified as 41-year-old Ernesto Gonzales, was driving north on Kipling when he swerved into oncoming traffic, causing the crash.
Gonzales and his 9-month-old child were in the car at the time of the crash. Gonzales suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital. The baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was not injured, police said.
According to police, none of the other people involved in the crash needed to be taken to the hospital.
The green sedan that Gonzales was driving was reported stolen out of Aurora. Gonzales had a handgun in the vehicle and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, which were violations of a protection order, police said.
The case has been turned over to the 1st Judicial District Attorney's Office.
Gonzales is being held on suspicion of:
- Aggravated motor vehicle theft
- Possession of a weapon by a previous offender
- DUI
- Child Abuse
- Violation of a protection order
- Driving under suspension
- Careless driving
