JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 reopened after multiple crashes forced them to close Thursday night. The closure began around 8:30 p.m. Around 11 p.m.
Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said wet snow froze and caused icy conditions on the interstate in Jefferson and Clear Creek counties.
CSP said troopers opened the westbound exit ramp at exit 254 to allow traffic to get around the crash scene. Troopers said traffic was trickling through. No commercial vehicles are allowed on US 6 or Colorado 74, CSP said.
Two semi trucks involved in a crash near Genesee had their saddle tanks rupture which caused diesel fuel to spill, CSP said. The cleanup and mitigation of the fuel spill, along with towing out the disabled trucks would take hours, according to CSP.
At 1:05 a.m. Friday, CDOT said the road was back open.
The passenger vehicle traction law was also put into effect by authorities for people driving along Highway 285 from C-470 to the Park County line, and along I-70 between Golden and Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels.
