DENVER — A driver was cited after a crash early Tuesday morning that sent a vehicle off the side of Interstate 25 and into the South Platte River, according to Denver Police.
The crash was reported about 5:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Alameda Avenue. The crash involved three vehicles, but the driver of one of those vehicles left the scene, said a spokesman for Denver Police.
The at-fault driver, who was in a red car, collided with another vehicle while making a lane change. One or both of those vehicles hit a third vehicle that was propelled into the barrier on the right side of the highway. It went over that barrier and landed on its side in the South Platte River.
Dive team members with the Denver Fire Department responded to the crash, but the woman was out of her car and sitting on top of it by the time they arrived. They went into the water and used a ladder to help the woman get out of the water.
She was taken to a hospital for treatment. The other driver was evaluated at the scene. He was cited for careless driving and driving without a license.
Traffic on southbound I-25 was slow during Tuesday morning's commute, while the right lanes of the interstate were closed. The vehicle was eventually removed from the west side of the river bank with two tow trucks.
